What to Expect on Your First Visit to Global Wildlife Center

Picture this: You’re sitting in a canopy-covered wagon rolling slowly across open savanna-style grassland, and a full-grown giraffe leans its enormous neck over the railing to eat from your  hand. A zebra trots alongside. A cape eland antelope watches from ten feet away. This isn’t a scene from a nature documentary or a safari in Africa — it’s a Tuesday afternoon in Folsom, Louisiana, about an hour north of New Orleans.

Global Wildlife Center is one of the largest free-roaming wildlife preserves of its kind in the entire country, and it’s been one of Louisiana’s best-kept secrets for decades. With thousands of exotic, endangered, and threatened animals living on the 900 acre-facility, it’s genuinely unlike anything else in the region — and if you haven’t been, you’re missing out!

If you’re planning your first visit and want to know exactly what to expect, how to pick the right tour, and how to make the most of your time there, this guide covers everything.

What is the Global Wildlife Center?

Global Wildlife Center is a 900-acre free-roaming wildlife preserve located in Folsom, Louisiana -a small town that sits about 50 miles north of New Orleans, 45 miles northeast of Baton Rouge, and just 18 miles from Hammond.

The keyword here is free-roaming. Unlike a traditional zoo where animals are kept in enclosed exhibits, the animals at Global Wildlife Center co-habitate across open pastures and grasslands. When you visit, they come to you. Your tour vehicle moves through their habitat — not the other way around. Giraffes, zebras, eland, llamas, bison, and dozens of other species roam freely and approach the wagons on their own terms.

The Center is home to animals representing hundreds of exotic, endangered, and threatened species from across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. It’s less Zoo and more Safari — and that distinction makes the whole experience feel fundamentally different from any animal attraction you’ve visited before.

It’s also worth knowing that Global Wildlife Center supports an array of conservation organizations focused on threatened and endangered species across the globe. When you support our conservation efforts here in Louisiana, you’re also contributing to a larger-scale mission of conservation around the world.

Which Tour Is Right for You?

Global Wildlife Center offers a few different tour experiences, so it helps to know the differences before you book. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Safari Wagon Tours

The Wagon Tour is our signature experience and the most popular choice for first-time visitors. Guests board a large, covered safari wagon for a guided journey through the preserve, where they’ll encounter animals from around the world in a free-roaming environment. Along the way, your tour educator introduces each species, sharing fun facts about their behaviors, habitats, and conservation status.

Guests also have the option to purchase feed pellets to hand-feed the animals during the tour. Feeding the animals adds an exciting interactive element to the experience as many of the animals eagerly approach the wagon for a snack. From curious giraffes to friendly llamas and antelope, the up-close encounters create unforgettable memories for guests of all ages.

Because the Wagon Tour is a shared group experience, the atmosphere is energetic, interactive, and full of excitement. Whether you’re visiting with children, family, friends, or enjoying an adults-only outing, the Wagon Tour offers a fun and engaging adventure that captures the heart of the preserve.

Private & Semi-Private Pinz Tours

For a more intimate experience, our Private and Semi-Private Pinz Tours offer a unique way to explore the preserve in a Pinzgauer — a rugged all-terrain vehicle designed to bring guests even closer to the animals. These smaller tours provide a more personal and relaxed atmosphere, allowing for additional interaction with both the animals and your guide.

Private Pinz Tours are ideal for couples, families, or small groups looking for a more exclusive safari experience. Because the Pinzgauer can travel to additional areas throughout the property that larger wagons cannot access, guests enjoy opportunities to see even more of the preserve and its animals up close. A minimum of four guests is required to book a Private Pinz Tour.

For guests who do not meet the minimum requirement, Semi-Private Pinz Tours are a wonderful alternative. These tours are perfect for singles, couples, and groups of three who still want a more intimate safari experience and are comfortable joining other small parties. The smaller group size creates a quieter, more personalized adventure while still offering the excitement of close animal encounters throughout the preserve.

Wildlife Encounters

While visiting the Visitor Center, guests can enjoy our Capybara Encounters, Tortoise Encounters, and Kangaroo Walkabout Experiences — unique on-foot adventures that offer unforgettable up-close interactions with some of our most beloved animals. These experiences are perfect for animal lovers looking for a more personal connection and can easily be added before or after your safari tour.

Whether you’re feeding a gentle tortoise, meeting our playful capybaras, or walking among kangaroos, these encounters create memorable moments and incredible photo opportunities you simply can’t get from a distance. Few experiences compare to standing face-to-face with these beautiful, fun, and fascinating animals.

For the safety of both guests and animals, participants must be at least 8 years old to take part in the Capybara and Tortoise Encounters.

Space is limited for all animal encounters, and advance reservations are strongly recommended to ensure availability.

Memberships:

We love our guests and want you to come back again and again! Because our animals are free-roaming throughout the preserve, you never know who you’ll encounter next — every tour experience can be completely different from the last.

With a Global Wildlife Center membership, you can visit as often as you’d like throughout the year and experience the incredible seasonal changes in the animals’ lives. From adorable baby season to the excitement of rut, thick winter coats, and the beauty of antlers in velvet, each season brings something new and unforgettable to the preserve.

If you decide to purchase a membership after your tour experience, we will be happy to deduct the cost of that day’s tour tickets for those covered under the membership from the membership purchase price.

What Animals Can You See at Global Wildlife Center?

Thousands of animals from dozens of species live on the preserve. Here’s a taste of what you might encounter:

  • Giraffes are hands-down the crowd favorite. They’ll lean their long necks directly into the wagon and take feed pellets right from your palm. Having a full-grown giraffe this close — close enough to see every detail of its patterning and feel its enormous tongue — is a memory that sticks.
  • Zebras roam freely across the pasture and often trot alongside the wagon. Their black-and-white stripes look almost surreal up close.
  • Capybara are friendly, expressive, and surprisingly funny. They have strong personalities and are happy to show them off when there’s food involved.
  • Bison, ankole cattle, and various deer species round out the large herd animals that tend to approach the wagon in groups.
  • Endangered and threatened species from across Africa and Asia are represented throughout the preserve, offering guests the rare opportunity to encounter many of these incredible animals up close – an experience that is difficult to find anywhere else.

One thing worth knowing: the animals are free-roaming throughout the preserve, which means there is never a guarantee that every species will be seen on any given day.  However, our experienced guides know the property and animal behaviors well, helping guests encounter a wide variety of species throughout the tour.

Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Here’s the practical information that will help you plan a smooth, enjoyable visit:

Best time to visit

  • Any time you are comfortable being outdoors is a great time to visit Global Wildlife Center! Louisiana spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) typically offer the most temperate weather conditions for touring the preserve.
  • Summer tours are available as well, but Louisiana heat and humidity can be intense, so guests should plan accordingly. Morning tours are usually significantly cooler and more comfortable than afternoon tours. Our Safari Wagon Tours and Private Pinz Tours are equipped with fans, but we highly recommend bringing a personal neck fan, dressing comfortably, and staying well hydrated during warmer months.
  • The Northshore also tends to stay approximately 7–10 degrees cooler than New Orleans, so if you are visiting during the winter months, bringing layers is recommended.
  • The Safari Wagons are designed primarily to provide shade from the sun rather than protection from rain. If rain is in the forecast, guests should plan to bring appropriate all-weather gear. Tours will continue to operate in rainy conditions whenever possible; however, delays may occur during heavy downpours or weather conditions that create safety concerns.
  • Weekday visits also tend to be quieter than weekends, which can be a great option for guests who prefer a more relaxed and peaceful pace during their experience.

How long does it take?

  • Plan for roughly 2 hours for a wagon tour from start to finish, including check-in, the tour itself, and time to explore the grounds. If you’re adding an Encounter, budget an extra 45 minutes.

How much animal food should I include with my tour?

  • The more food, the more fun! Unless you prefer to simply observe the animals from a distance and do not want close-up feeding interactions, we recommend at least a Family Bucket of feed for a few people on a Safari Wagon Tour.
  • Many returning guests choose to purchase a Sack or even a Bin to make sure they have plenty of feed throughout their experience. The animals love the pellets, and having extra feed often means more opportunities for unforgettable up-close encounters along the tour route.

What to wear and bring

  • Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended — you may be walking on uneven ground and near large animals.
  • Bring sunscreen and a hat, especially for afternoon tours.
  • A camera or a phone with a good camera is essential. The animal encounters make for exceptional photos.
  • Purchase animal food with your reservation – the more food, the more fun!
  • Bring all-weather gear – whether it be a raincoat, personal fan, or jacket, dress for the weather conditions of the day!

Tips for visiting with young kids

  • Kids of all ages generally love the Safari Wagon Tour, but very young children — especially those under 3 years old — may find the large animals a bit startling when they approach the wagon up close. Most children are absolutely delighted by the experience and quickly warm up to the animals, but every child is different, so parents should simply keep their child’s personality and comfort level in mind when planning their visit.
  • Our tour guides are excellent at making the experience both educational and age-appropriate, while keeping the atmosphere fun, engaging, and not overwhelming for younger guests.

Booking

  • Tickets should be booked in advance by visiting globalwildlife.com, especially during weekends and busy seasons. While walk-ins are sometimes accommodated, availability is not guaranteed, and tours frequently sell out in advance.
  • Check the FAQ page on our website for the most current pricing, hours, and any special event dates before you go.

Location

  • 26389 Hwy 40, Folsom, LA 70437. About 1 hour from New Orleans, 45 minutes from Baton Rouge, and 20 minutes from Hammond.

Why Global Wildlife Center Is Worth the Trip

Louisiana has no shortage of things to do, but Global Wildlife Center occupies a category all its own. It’s not a zoo. It’s not a theme park. It’s a genuine wildlife preserve where thousands of animals roam freely across hundreds of acres — and where guests have the opportunity to step into their world for an unforgettable experience.

In early 2026, Global Wildlife Center was nominated for the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Award for Best Safari Park — national recognition that reflects what locals and returning visitors have known for years. The preserve was also named the Louisiana Travel Association’s Attraction of the Year for 2026, an honor voted on by tourism professionals across the state.

Beyond the accolades, what truly makes the experience special is simple: there are very few places in the United States where you can hand-feed a giraffe, watch zebras run across open grasslands, and learn about endangered species conservation — all in the same afternoon. For families, wildlife lovers, and visitors looking for something genuinely memorable while in Louisiana, it is an experience unlike any other.

Every ticket purchased also helps support Global Wildlife Center’s ongoing conservation efforts through programs like Quarters for Conservation, which provides funding to field conservation organizations working to protect endangered species around the world. Guests are not simply participating in an adventure — they are helping support a larger mission of education, conservation, and wildlife protection.
