Northshore’s 40 Under 40: Congratulations, Dr. Kanyon!

Northshore’s 40 Under 40:

Congrats, Dr. Kanyon!

Global Wildlife is thrilled to celebrate one of our own, Dr. Kanyon McLean, Director of Animal Programs, for being named a 2025 Northshore Forty Under 40 honoree. This prestigious recognition from Northshore Media Group highlights emerging leaders who demonstrate excellence, innovation, and impact in their fields, and Dr. Kanyon embodies all of that and more.

Earlier this month, Dr. Kanyon attended a special reception at the Southern Hotel where she was honored alongside an inspiring group of professionals who are making meaningful contributions across the Northshore community. We couldn’t be prouder to see her commitment, passion, and leadership recognized on such a well-deserved stage.

A Leader Shaping the Future of Animal Care & Conservation

A Florida native with a clear passion for wildlife from the start, Dr. Kanyon earned her Bachelor’s in Animal Sciences from the University of Florida (Go Gators!) before completing her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University. Her career journey led her to nearly six years as Staff Veterinarian at the Montgomery Zoo, where she gained deep experience caring for diverse species and advancing zoological medicine.

Today, as Global Wildlife’s first full-time veterinarian, she oversees veterinary care, animal husbandry, and education. She likes to describe her work as “anything and everything that has to do with an animal.” Her efforts are essential to the wellbeing of our animals, the guest experience, and the educational mission that drives Global Wildlife.

Inspired by legendary conservationists like Jane Goodall, whose words resonate deeply with her, “We are part of the animal kingdom, not separated from it,” Dr. Kanyon approaches her work with humility, curiosity, and respect for all living creatures.

She is passionate about advancing knowledge through publications and conference presentations, contributing to the broader zoological community and helping shape the future of conservation and animal care.

Beyond the Herd: A Life of Curiosity

When she’s not caring for animals at the preserve, Dr. Kanyon is often off exploring the world. She loves traveling to new places, learning about different cultures, and observing wildlife in their native habitats. She also enjoys visiting zoological facilities, watching reruns of The Golden Girls, and spending time with Mr. Peter Biltmore, her opinionated lagomorph and beloved fur-child.

And while her expertise spans many species, those who know her best know she has a special place in her heart for birds, especially flamingos.

A Well-Deserved Honor

We are incredibly proud to have Dr. Kanyon as part of the Global Wildlife family. Her dedication, passion, and leadership make a profound impact every day, and this Forty Under 40 recognition shines a spotlight on the incredible work she brings to our community.
